Plans unveiled for Birmingham’s first dedicated padel facility

The Padel Club is looking to open a 10-court site as part of a major expansion across the UK.

Birmingham’s first dedicated padel facility could be on its way after UK operator The Padel Club announced it is developing plans with IM Properties for a new club at Peddimore in Royal Sutton Coldfield, around 13k from the city centre.

The Padel Club has drawn up proposals, which are subject to planning, for a 10-court facility featuring two open-air and eight covered courts, with a clubhouse and landscaped social area.

“Peddimore’s strategic location within Birmingham, and now part of Sutton Connect’s Green Travel District, makes it an ideal location for The Padel Club to debut in the city, making it accessible by walking, cycling or public transport,” The Padel Club said.

Richard Lawrence, development director at IM Properties, added: “Providing the local community with an amenity space and hub for the scheme is part of our placemaking strategy on Peddimore, which fits in with our Sustainable Futures vision focusing on People, Planet and Place.

“The Padel Club concept appealed to us because it is fresh, exciting and accessible. The facilities are designed to encourage people to stay afterwards, socialise and build a community of like-minded individuals.”

Launched in July 2022, The Padel Club’s site in Wilmslow, Cheshire features four outdoor courts, with an additional four canopied courts and social space due to be built this year. The company also has a facility in Gloucester with nine indoor courts.

The proposals for Birmingham are part of major expansion plans for the firm across the UK in 2025.

Last week the company announced it will open a second club in Cheshire, in the town of Knutsford. The facility will be developed in partnership with Bruntwood to create four new covered courts at the property provider’s collaborative business community, Booths Park.

Booths Park’s fitness and wellbeing offering already includes a Peloton bike studio and wellness suite. The Padel Club said it will work with Bruntwood to bring the site forward, with planning permission due to be submitted shortly.

The Padel Club has previously unveiled plans for a new site at TraffordCity, a shopping and leisure complex in Manchester, which it said will be the largest purpose-built padel facility in the north of the UK, with 11 courts, alongside a clubhouse, on-site retail and dining.

Plans are also underway to open five courts at the luxury private estate Wynyard Park, in the Tees Valley, north east England, and a new four-court facility in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Kris Ball, CEO of The Padel Club, said: "Cheshire has been the first home of The Padel Club, and the recent expansion to TraffordCity and more recently, Gloucester underscores our serious desire to be the leader in padel not only in Cheshire but across the country."

He added: “Birmingham is an exciting next step in our expansion, and we welcome the opportunity to share this journey with IM Properties, who are a perfect fit for our ambitions to connect people and create a strong sense of community.”
